Some 44,000 Native Americans served in the United States military during World War II: at the time, one-third of all able-bodied Indian men from 18 to 50 years of age.

Some of these men became the infamous code-talkers who would manage communications across the world, but speaking in their native language. The significance of this is that the Native American languages are completely unrelated to old world languages, and so it was impossible for nazi spies who might be listening to understand the orders being given.

The native americans are, as the name suggests, a group of people native to the sub-antarctic part of the americas. This page will focus exclusively on native americans that inhabit the part of the new world now known as The United States of America. The native americans are a group of central-east Asians who crossed the beringa straights aproximetly 20.000 years ago, when the ice age had created a land bridge between Siberia, and Alaska. There are many diverse peoples who inhabited, and still inhabit the united states, ranging from the Iroquois around new england, to the Pomo in California, from the Sioux in the north, to the Navajo in the south.

European contact with the native population of the americas.

European contact with the natives of the americas in fact goes back many centuries further then most people suspect. The first incident of this is in fact of Icelandic settlers who sailed to Newfoundland in the 10th century. Although these appear to have disapeared one way or another, with folklore claiming that they left after a number of altercations with agressive natives.

Native Americans today number at around one million, if one is being very generous. Some of the biggest tribes are: Navajo, Cherokee, Iriqouis, Apache and Sioux.

Native american tribes today

Many people may know the native americans as "Indians", however this term exists simply because of the incompitence of the original settlers. The original voyages to the new world were actually not in search of a new continent, but rather for a new, more efficient path to reach the riches of India, so when columbus reached the Americas he thought that he was in Asia, and believed the people he met there were in fact Indians. The name stuck.

When Europeans started colonizing and actually settling the new world, originally the english in the New England area of the united states, the systematic stealing of land from the natives became even more accelerated. This process lasted right up until the world wars, after which the Native Americans were confined to reservations. Admitedly these reservations are legally independant from the united states, and are therefor able to, for example run large casinos, which generated large amounts of revenue for the small population of the tribe whose land it was built on.
